Cherokee County"Cherokee Georgia Mountaineers"This company was originally known as Co. M, l8th Regiment, Georgia Infantry. It was formed in part of Captain Jesse Burtz's Independent Company of Georgia Infantry November 13, 1861. It had on its original roll probably 176 men. It was composed of men from four counties: Cherokee, Pickens, Forsyth and Dawson. Before being mustered into service at Richmond, Virginia, being too large for one company, it was divided, retaining in the original company, under Captain Burtz, the men from Cherokee and Pickens counties, while the men from Forsyth and Dawson counties were formed in a new company.
